The D.O. (Designation of Origin) Jumilla area is in the prebetic area, forming part of the transition between the Mediterranean Levante coast and the La Mancha Castilian plateau. It stands out due to its wide valleys, surrounded by mountain ridges. The only permanent flow of water is the Mundo River which runs through the Hellín area.

The regulatory council for the Jumilla Wines Designation of Origin (D.O. Vinos de Jumilla) was set up in 1966 and from then on the wines from the area have started to be marketed on a large scale. These wines are carefully prepared in its seven towns in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. Today the town of Jumilla, previously known as Gémina, is the hub of the designation of origin with 50% of the wine industry and almost all of the area’s bottling plants.
